How to Score Highest Marks in English Section Based on the CGL Tier-1 2017 Pattern

Dear Students, This is the exam time, the time that will decide the course of your future. This is the first hurdle towards your dream job and you need to cross it with confidence and highest marks. SSC CGL Tier-1 2017 Exam is being conducted from 5th August onward, today is the fifth day of the exam and the exam has been conducted in total 7 shifts till now. We have published exam analysis of all the shifts and we will continue to do so till the end of the CGL Tier-1 2017 Exam. One subject that has surprised all of us and that is English Section. Let's discuss this section in detail and score maximum marks with complete accuracy.

In CGL Tier-1 2017, In previous years CGL Tier-1 exam, mainly questions were asked from Error Detection, Fill in the blanks, Vocabulary based questions, Idioms, One Word Substitutions, Sentence Improvements and Reading Comprehension. But this time, The new types questions have been introduced. In CGL Tier-1 2017, questions are being asked from Voice(Active/Passive), Narration(Direct/Indirect), Jumbled Paragraph(PQRS), and Cloze test. So friends, this is the new pattern of English questions. You need to revise and practice all these questions types to have an edge over other candidates. In this post we will discuss strategy for all these questions types separately.

The first big surprise has been introduction of Jumbled Paragraph. two questions are being asked from this topic. You need to revise the trick and approach to solve Jumbled Paragraph Questions.  Here are a few examples of jumbled paragraph.

Q1.
P. These researchers have become so knowledgeable about their subjects that they have been guiding us to the right place at the right time.
Q. The great increase, during the past decade, in the number of scientists actively involved in observing animals in the wild is very important.
R. They have guided us in seeing exactly that aspect of animal behaviour that was of particular interest to us.
S. Almost every group of large animals is now being studied by scientists everywhere.

Sol.  The logical and correct order of the sentences of the given paragraph should be- SRQP

Q2.
P. Widely published tables of income levels of all countries indicate that when incomes are higher, the greater is the contribution made by the manufacturing industry.
Q. Countries that have little or no industry are almost invariable poor.
R. The lesson is clear, to overcome poverty and backwardness, a country must become industrialized.
S. Industrialization is seen as the key to growth and a prerequisite for development.

Sol.  The logical and correct order of the sentences of the given paragraph should be- SPQR

Another change in pattern that we are seeing is the Voice (Active/Passive). This is the one the forms of verbs. You should once revise all the rules regarding Active/passive. Let's discuss some examples of it to get clear idea.


Q1. She always cooks delicious food.
(a) Delicious food is always cooked by her
(b) Delicious food is always being cooked by her
(c) Delicious food has been cooker by her
(d) Delicious food was being cooked by her
Ans- a  (use ‘delicious food’ As subject of the passive voice)

Q2. Mother gave him a little puppy.
(a) He was given a little puppy by mother
(b) A little puppy was being given to him by mother
(c) He had been given a little puppy by mother
(d) A little puppy is given to him by his mother
Ans- a (use ‘he’ as subject of the passive voice and ‘mother’ as object)

Now, Let's move toward the third surprise in SSC CGL Tier-1 2017 English Section and it is Narration(Direct/Indirect). One or two questions are being asked from this topic as well. You need to learn all the rules regarding direct and indirect sentences. Have a look at the following examples.

Q1. Shreyas said to his brother, “Are you feeling better?”
(a) Shreyas asked his brother if he was feeling better.
(b) Shreyas told his brother are you feeling better.
(c) Shreyas told that he was feeling better.
(d) Shreyas asked his brother are you felling better.

S1. Ans.(a)
Sol.  Change ‘said to’ into asked, Use ‘if’ as conjunction in the case of interrogative sentence, change pronoun ‘you’ into ‘he’

Q2. Mini said to me, “I have bought this flat for my mother”.
(a) Mini told that she had bought that flat for her mother.
(b) Mini said that she bought that flat for her mother.
(c) Mini said she has bought that flat for her mother.
(d) Mini told me that she had bought that flat for her mother.

S2. Ans.(d)
Sol. Change ‘said to’ into ‘told’. Change tense of reported speech into past perfect, change pronoun ‘I’ into ‘her’.

And the final fourth surprise in CGL Tier-1 2017, that is, cloze tests. Let's have an example of cloze test as well. For cloze test, you need to first read the whole passage ignoring the blank spaces, then try to fit all the options in the respective blanks, and you will get the correct answer which will fit in the context correctly. In cloze test, mainly questions are based on prepositions, phrasal verbs and vocabulary. So practice accordingly keeping in mind all these tricks. Here is an example of cloze test.

Directions (1-5): In these questions, in the following passage, some of the words have been left out and the blanks have numbered from 1 to 5. First, read the passage over the try to understand what it is about. Fill in the blanks with the help of the alternatives given. Indicate your correct alternative.

The inevitable effect of mechanical production is uniformity, and although uniformity may lead to monotony, it need not lack beauty. Sol. ‘taste’ fits in the context of the paragraph correctly. In the latter part of the paragraph, the word ‘taste’ is mentioned multiple times. Hence we get the hint.

S2. Ans.(b)
Sol. Preposition ‘of’ is correct usage.

S3. Ans.(a)
Sol. ‘shopper’ is correct word.

S4. Ans.(a)
Sol. gaudy- extravagantly bright or showy, typically so as to be tasteless.

Sol. ‘resolved’ is correct word.
